CENTURY STEEL ERECTORS ANNUAL SAFETY SEMINAR 2009

On Saturday March 28,2009 over 180 front line supervisors, General Foreman, Foreman and key employees attended Century Steel Erectors Annual Safety Seminar. Attendees heard from safety professionals from Lincoln Welding on the proper use and handling of welding and burning equipment and from Maxim Crane regarding crane safety as well as proper crane signaling. Both presentations included visual aids as well as a very informative power point presentation. The highlight of the seminar was a presentation by Rich McElhaney of Taggart Global LLC- Director of Safety & Risk Management. Rich's presentation discussed a job site accident which included the 911 call and the after effects it played on the victum, his family and friends. He concluded by letting everyone know he was the individual involved in the accident. It was a very powerful presentation which left a lasting inpression on all attendees.

The day concluded by acknowledging several individuals for outstanding safety performance over the past year. Finally, the J.R. Taylor Memorial Award was presented to James "Jimmy" Schueller for his work and dedication to Century Steel Erectors Co.

On February 4, 2009 over 190 individuals attended this years Annual Ironworker Employers Association of Western Pennsylvania Dinner held at the Lexus Club located at PNC Park. Attendees at this years event included not only Association Members but invited guest from various labor organizations who are our partners, various facility owners who are our customers as well as contractors and fabricators who our members have worked for on various projects throughout the region. Potential new members were also invited to learn more about the Association and its activities.As in previous years this event allows attendees an excellent opportunity to network with each other while also speaking with the customer/owner representatives they have worked for over the past year.


"2009 ELEVENTH ANNUAL JOHN P. [JACK] DALEY SAFETY CRAFTSMANSHIP AWARD"



At this years annual dinner the following Companies and individuals were honored as winners of the Thirteenth Annual John P. (Jack) Daily Safety/Craftsman Award for work preformed in the calendar year 2008.

Mr.Fred Shumaker of Amelie Construction & Supply LLC for his supervision of work on the emergency repairs on the Birmingham Bridge Project and the repairs and renovations to the SR 279 Fort Duquesne Bridge to Camp Horn Road project. The work on the Birmingham Bridge included the installation of temporary shoring required to stabilize the bridge while stopping it from further movement. It also allowed for the removal and replacement of the bridge bearings. The SR279 project included the jacking of the structure to allow for the repair and/or replacement of bearings along with the installation of miscellaneous steel.

Mr. Ralph "Bucky" Croushore of Abate Irwin Inc. for his supervision of three outage projects at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Plant in Brackenridge, Pennsylvania. Work on these three projects included but is not limited to tearing down and rebuilding of a large portion of the Rust/Salem Furnace. Some of the other work involved replacement of the rolls, conveyor and repairs to the water separator tank shell as well as other various maintenance activities.

Mr. Ken Hobbs of Century Steel Erectors Company for his supervision of work on the structural steel erection on the Dickinson School of Law at Penn State University in State College , Pennsylvania. This project included a complicated steel design involving slopes, curves, angles as well as elevation changes. The intricate steel design was made more complicated by a complex curtainwall design which involved erection tolerances exceeding industry standards.

Mr. Ken Berliner of D-M Products, Inc. for his supervision of the curtain wall erection on the new Clinical Service and Research Buildings as well as Staff Garage at the New Children's Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is a unique project due to its eight different colors utilized on the curtain wall, storefront and structural walls as well as miscellaneous window installation.

Mr. Rich Schlickrull of Stevens Paintion Corporation for his supervision of work on the Gas Fired and Waste Heat Boiler along with several miscellaneous maintenance projects at AK Steel's Butler Works in Butler, Pennsylvania. Rich had to overcome many design issues while allowing the men to work safely around an active steel mill. Most, if not all of the maintenance projects were worked on short notice due to emergency shut downs as well as working around all the obstacles of an active steel mill.
