IRONWORKER APPRENTICESHIP COMPETITION 2010

On April 16th, 2010, 37 Iron Worker Apprentices competed in a day full of fun and challenging activities; including rigging, instrument reading, column climbing, welding and burning, knot tying, and reinforcing. The first place winner was Jeremy Brewer and 2nd place winner was Dan Douylliez. Congratulations for a job well done!

ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING AND DINNER/PNC PARK 2010

Due to a major winter storm, the ASSOCIATION ANNUAL DINNER & MEETING scheduled for February 10, 2010 was canceled however the JOHN P."JACK" DALEY SAFETY CRAFTSMEN'S AWARDS are as follows.
2009 FOURTEENTH ANNUAL JOHN P."JACK" DALEY SAFETY CRAFTSMEN'S AWARDS:
IN THE PROJECT CATAGORY 0-5,000 MAN/HOURS In the project category:
Mr. Jamie Sawich of Alvarez, Inc. for his supervision of work on the Route 28 North Bridge Replacement. The scope of work included erecting steel girders on an 11 span 4 lines wide bridge. Clearances were very tight and the site was very congested. All work was done on time without a lost time accident.
IN THE CATAGORY 5,000 - 10,000 MAN/HOURS
Mr Bill Bernard of Amelie Construction & Supply LLC. for his supervision of work on two bridge projects for PENDOT. The projects included the SR-1077 Section 02M Donora-Monessen Bridge and SR 453 Section O-01 Pemberton Bridge in Blair County. Both projects involved either the repair and replacement of structural steel members, reset bearings, drilling crack relief holes and/ or jacking of the bridge as required by design. Each project was worked over either and active river or railroad track.
IN THE CATAGORY OF 10,000 TO 15,000 MAN/HOURS
Mr. Todd Miller of UHL Construction Company for his supervision of work on the New Manufacturing Facility for Selectrode Industries, Inc. in Aliquippa, PA., as well as the Expedited Maintenance Facility for the Norfork Southern Railway in Conway,PA. Both of these projects involved the erection of a complete Pre-Engineered metal building package including all accessories as required by the design. In the case of the Selectrode project a redesign was needed in the field since the building requirements change after the materials were delivered. Even with these changes both projects were able to be completed on the original schedules with no safety issues.
IN THE CATAGORY OVER 15,00 MAN/HOURS
Both Larry George and Barry Zahorchak of Advantage Steel & Construction, LLC for their supervision of the CSX Railroad Bridge over the Ohio River in Beaver and Monaca.The project involved structural steel repairs and replacement to a truss bridge floor system while maintaining active railroad traffic on the structure. An underdecking system was developed and installed which protected the workman from fall hazards as well as providing a more ergonomic access to the work areas This system eliminated many of the owners concerns of moving the trains while the work was on going.
IN THE CATAGORY OF MAINTENANCE
Both Don House and Rich Kirich of Century Steel Erectors Company for their supervision of numerous maintenance projects at U S Steel's Clairton Plant and Irwin Works Facilities in the Mon Valley. Both of these individuals are being recognized for their abilities to immediately respond to a variety of situations and conditions whereby they provided directions and solutions to various owner issues. These situations were often hazardous and required intense scrutiny in order to safely and effectively resolve the issues and perform the work.
HONORABLE MENTION AWARDS
In addition to the above awards several Honorable Mention Plaques were presented to Amelie Construction and Supply,LLC., Stevens Engineers and Constructors, Inc., Abate-Irwin, Inc., Somerset Steel Erection Co., Inc., D-M Products, Inc., Alvarez, Inc., Advantage Steel and Construction , LLC., G. Kidd, Inc., Songer Steel Services, Inc., and Century Steel Erectors, Co.
