IRONWORKER MERGER LOCAL 772 & 3

Effective May,1, 2008 Local 772 Clearfield, PA will be merged into Local 3 Pittsburgh, PA. This merger was announced by the Ironworkers General Executive Board based on a discussion and meeting held on April 18, 2008. Robert Allen, former Business manager of Local 772 , will continue to service the members in the area as well as the owners and contractors as the appointed Business Agent. Local 3 Business Manager, Scott Malley, will have overall responsibility for this new territory as well as all the other territories of local 3.
33rd ANNUAL CONSTRUCTION LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL DINNER

On the evening of May 1, 2008 the Ironworker Employers Association of Western Pennsylvania participated in the 33 rd Annual Construction Legislative Council Dinner held at the Le Mont Restaurant on Mt. Washington. The IWEA is one of twelve (12) multi-discipline coalition members of the Council. Since its inception the Construction Legislation Council has been the voice of Western Pennsylvania construction contractors, architects, users and material suppliers engaged in commercial, industrial, institutional, highway, transit and utility construction.
The dinner provides council members an excellent opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and comments with local, state and federal elected representatives from Western Pennsylvania.
CENTURY STEEL ERECTORS ANNUAL SAFETY MEETING 2008

" On Saturday April 5, 2008 over 180 Iron Workers and invited guest attended Century Steel Erectors Annual Safety Meeting. A presentation to several key foreman/supervisors regarding safety awards they received throughout the year were presented. This included the Ironworker Employers Associations 12th Annual Safety/Craftsman award.
One of the key presentations was provided by Joe Bucci, an attorney with the firm Houston Harbaugh. Joe discussed the importance and steps one should take to keep accurate jobsite records and documentation. He noted that this information is extremely important to protect Century steel during claim submittals.
Other presentations addressed Erector Certification, Rigging Practices, Welder Safety as well as multi-lift rigging procedures.
The primary presentation was given by Scott Malley, Business Manager of Iron Workers Local 3, Pittsburgh , PA. Scott noted that the industry has changed in recent years and Local 3 is looking at there operation as a business. They are working with local contractors as partners to address issues which are beneficial to both parties. To help in this effort he noted the International has developed a programs titled "Survival of the Fittest" which is a program with classes to help the union and their membership accomplish these goals. In addition he addressed the Code of Excellence which the Iron Workers have adopted so that owners and contractors know what to expect of and Iron Worker when he is working on their sites and in their facilities."

" On February 13, 2008 over 180 individuals attended this years Ironworker Employers Association Annual Meeting and Dinner held at the Lexus Club located at PNC Park. This years special guest Speaker was Rocky Bleier, legendary Pittsburgh Steeler and NFL running back. Mr. Bleier's Presentation "BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE" pointed out ways we can all reach new levels of inner confidence. His motivational message noted how ordinary people can become extraordinary achievers while defining success in the new American Century. Attendees at this years event included not only Association Members but invited guest from the various Labor Organizations, who are our partners, as well as the owner community ,who are our customers , and the various contractor, fabricators and potential members who Association Members work with on a daily basis. Also attending were several elected officials or their representatives. This years event provided attendees an excellent opportunity to not only network with each other but also speak with owner/customer representatives our members have worked for over the past year."
"2008 ELEVENTH ANNUAL JOHN P. [JACK] DALEY SAFETY CRAFTSMANSHIP AWARD"

" At this years Association Annual Dinner the following individuals and companies were honored for winning the Twelfth Annual John P' ( Jack ) Daley Safety/Craftsman Award for work preformed in the calendar year 2007.

Mr. Scott Marshall of G. Kidd, Inc. for his supervision of work on the repairs at David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA. The work included installing heavy plate seats under existing steel girders and beams. As well as being a very high profile project many on site obstacles were encountered.

Mr Harvey Meyer of Alvarez, Inc. for his supervision of work on the Brownsville to Uniontown section of the Mon- Fayette Expressway, SR 43. Work included the installation of a 690 Foot Dual span and 1002 Foot five span continuous steel multi-girder bridge for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.

Mr. Rocky Lagoni of Lagoni Erection, Inc. for his supervision of work on the Medrad Building in Sarver,PA. The work included the erection of three pre-engineered building frames as well as the insulated roofing and siding panels. This project utilized the new Pre-Engineered Metal Building Agreement.

Mr. Dennis Bowers of Century Steel Erectors Company for supervision of work on the structural and miscellaneous steel, precast stairs and metal deck erection on the 151 First Side Condo's in Downtown Pittsburgh. This project was designed around the Hambro Joist System which was the first time this type of design and construction has been utilized in the Region.

Mr. Jason Trypus of Abate-Irwin, Inc. for his supervision of various maintenance projects at either AK Steel in Butler , PA or at Allegheny Ludlum in Brackenridge, PA. Most, if not all, of this work was preformed on short notice due to emergency shut downs as well as working around all the obstacles of an active steel mill.

- CUMBERLAND TIMES-NEWS, MARYLAND - Nearly 300 people gathered Tuesday at the construction site for the Western Maryland Health System's new hospital on Willowbrook Road to watch as the highest pieces of the steel structure were set into place. Known as a topping -out ceremony, the event is a long-standing tradition among construction workers, particularly iron workers. "We are truly excited to celebrate this significant milestone in our building project," said Barry P.Ronan, WMHS President and CEO. "The placement of the highest beam in the steel structure comes less than one year after ground was broken for the new hospital....."

J.R.TAYLOR MEMORIAL / SEPTEMBER 2007"

On Sunday September 9, 2007 over 500 motorcycles participated in the 4th Annual J. R. Taylor Memorial Bike Run and Tailgate Party. The purpose of the event is to benefit the construction of the "J.R. Taylor Memorial Bridge to be constructed on the Montour Trail at the Clifton/McMurray Road Crossing in Bethel Park, PA. The run started at 10:00 am from Al's Cafe and traveled an 80 mile scenic route throughout Washington County. On the riders return a family style tailgate party in Al's parking lot took place. In all over 750 people enjoyed the day of fun and friendship which included music, food, beverages as well as door prizes, a Chinese Auction and raffle. The Taylor family would like to thank the riders as well as the corporate sponsors, vendors, family, friends and guest and they hope to see everyone again next year.
